How can I clear up some room on my computer?
1. Delete programs you're not using anymore...
From your "START" menu click on "SETTINGS" and then "CONTROL PANEL." Look for an icon that says "ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS." This utility allows you to uninstall programs that you may not be using anymore. This is the safest cleanest way to surgically remove all of the dozens of files each program places all over your machine. If- during the course of uninstalling a program you see a dialog box that says "the file you are trying to remove is shared...do you want to remove it..." you're safer if you say "NO, do not remove shared files..."

2. Dump your browser cache...
Each browser is different and I'm sorry I don't have the time here to outline every one of them - if you use the help feature in your browser software there should be detailed instructions...here's how you do it in Internet Explorer... click on the menu item "TOOLS" then click on "INTERNET OPTIONS" this will open a window with the section called Temporary Internet Files in the middle...pick "DELETE FILES" and all the temporary files on your computer will be removed.

3. Clear out your temp folders...
There are folders on your computer that store temporary information that is used while programs are running or installing. In a perfect computer world, these files would be removed as soon as they are done. Unfortunately, Windows crashes, locks up, etc... and these temporary files get left behind...I have seen computers with almost 100 mb of temporary files... Using your windows explorer program look for a folder on your hard drive called "temp" - check your root (c:\temp) or in the windows directory (c:\windows\temp). If you see a list of files called wqlekqw43q4.tmp or other bogus looking names you can delete them. Sometimes windows will tell you that access to this file is denied...this means it's currently in use. Next time you reboot your machine you should be able to get rid of it.

4. Empty the recycle bin...
Now that you've gone through and taken care of all these extra files - guess what?? Most of them are STILL on your machine - They're in the recycle bin waiting for you to delete them ONE MORE TIME. The Recycle Bin offers you a safe guard to keep you from accidently deleting files. You can check the files to make sure nothing valuable is in there and then click on "empty recycle bin" under the File menu...
